I have stayed busy this weekend.

This weekend I worked on adding some new features to the blog. I have attached two YouTube videos. The top one is for the kids, and it is very funny to listen to. The video below the "A little bit about me" section is a favorite song of mine. It is very inspirational, and I hope you all enjoy it. I intend on changing these videos periodically, so keep checking in with me!

No School Today!

The snow finally arrived! It started about 11:00 this morning, and it is still falling. It is beautiful to watch. I hope everyone enjoys their day off from school and work.
I bet the Chia Pet's hair is growing like crazy!!! My guess is that it will be at least one inch tall by Monday. That is pretty amazing, considering we just started it last Wednesday the 20th. Can't wait to see it.

Today was another great day!

Today was such a busy day. We started off the day with reading. We focused on reviewing our new "Amazing Words" or vocabulary words. We always have a song that goes along with the new words we learn, and the kids are great singers! We also practiced finding the word that does not belong. This would be a little bit of phonics and phonemic awareness review. For example, I wrote "dog, fish, pot" on the board. The students had to find the word that had the middle sound that did not belong. In this case, fish makes the /i/ sound and the other two make the /o/ sound, so "fish" did not belong.

In math today we ordered objects by their lengths, from smallest to largest or shortest to tallest. The students have no problem doing this. Then, we measured the objects with linking cubes. The boys and girls are good at this too. They are a very smart group!

This afternoon we journaled. This might be one of their favorite things to do. The journal prompt was to write about their pet or a pet they would like to have. One girl wrote "I want a monkey because they are fun!" Many of the kids wrote about fish, dogs, rabbits, and cats.

Another exciting thing going on in class is science. We started science after Christmas break. Now that we don't have to spend so much time on handwriting, we are focusing more on science. Currently, we are studying the life science of plants. We are watching a Chia Pet grow hair, and the students absolutely love it! I hope to post pictures soon to my school website. You can find the link to my main site on the top left side of this blog.

Well, that is all for now. I hope to keep posting as I have time. Looks like we may have snow tonight. Wonder if we will be at school tomorrow???

Report Cards

Please look closely at your child’s report card and work on any of the items that were listed as I or N (improving and needs improvement). Doing a little extra practice at home can help your child receive a satisfactory mark (S) on his/her next report card. It would also be helpful to practice the skills listed on the report card that have not been assessed yet. These skills will be taught in class during the spring semester of school and practicing these skills ahead of time with your child will help him/her advance quickly in class. Remember, it is important that all of the items listed on the report card be met at a satisfactory level (S) at the end of the year so that your child is ready for first grade.
