Today was such a busy day. We started off the day with reading. We focused on reviewing our new "Amazing Words" or vocabulary words. We always have a song that goes along with the new words we learn, and the kids are great singers! We also practiced finding the word that does not belong. This would be a little bit of phonics and phonemic awareness review. For example, I wrote "dog, fish, pot" on the board. The students had to find the word that had the middle sound that did not belong. In this case, fish makes the /i/ sound and the other two make the /o/ sound, so "fish" did not belong.
In math today we ordered objects by their lengths, from smallest to largest or shortest to tallest. The students have no problem doing this. Then, we measured the objects with linking cubes. The boys and girls are good at this too. They are a very smart group!
This afternoon we journaled. This might be one of their favorite things to do. The journal prompt was to write about their pet or a pet they would like to have. One girl wrote "I want a monkey because they are fun!" Many of the kids wrote about fish, dogs, rabbits, and cats.
Another exciting thing going on in class is science. We started science after Christmas break. Now that we don't have to spend so much time on handwriting, we are focusing more on science. Currently, we are studying the life science of plants. We are watching a Chia Pet grow hair, and the students absolutely love it! I hope to post pictures soon to my school website.
