Behavior Policy

In our class, we use a color coded system:
Sparkle: The child was “caught being good” or recognized for going above and beyond in the classroom.
Green: The child followed school procedures and was respectful to his/her teachers and peers.
Yellow: The child misbehaved after a verbal warning and had recess reduced by 5 minutes.
Red: The child’s misbehavior was severe and s/he missed all recess.

Every student will begin each day on green and will be given one verbal warning before any discipline action takes place. After a verbal warning, if additional rules are broken the student will be moved to a yellow behavior status, followed by red for more severe behavior. At the end of the day, if the student was respectful and well behaved, s/he will receive a green status. This behavior is expected, but also something to be praised. Green means your child did a great job at school and is something to be very proud of by the teacher, parent, and student! If a student has been exceptionally helpful or kind, that child will receive sparkle status. Sparkle is a prized recognition and is intended to encourage the children to demonstrate respect and compassion towards each other. Typically, a child will only receive sparkle once or twice a week, so please praise your child for both green and sparkle days.
If a student makes physical contact with another student in an aggressive form (hitting, pinching, pushing, etc), s/he will receive a verbal warning/conference for the first offense. For each physical contact made after the initial warning, the student will be paddled. If a child is paddled, the teacher will contact the parents to discuss the situation.

BLURT BOARD
In order to encourage the students to have patience and raise their hands during group activities and lessons, there is a "Blurt Board" in our classroom.  Each student will begin the day with three jewels on the board. If s/he shouts out during a lesson, forgets to raise his/her hand, and or talks during a quiet work time, after one verbal warning, the student will be asked to remove a jewel from his/her blurt board .  If all three jewels are removed within the day, the student will move from green down to yellow.

The board provides each child three chances and three visual reminders.  It's overall purpose is to encourage the students to realize we are a class of many students, all wanting to express ourselves.  Nonetheless, we must be patient, take turns, and respect each other as we work together throughout the day.

POSITIVE REWARDS
When students are “caught being good,” they will receive verbal praises and may earn Sparkle on their behavior log. Some additional rewards are listed below.
Sticker Chart
Each time a student is recognized for a positive behavior, s/he will get to place a sticker on his/her individual sticker chart. Once all spots on the chart have been covered with stickers, the student will turn in the completed chart and receive a prize from the prize box.
Potato Head
Whenever the entire class is recognized for a positive behavior, they will receive a piece of the potato head. When the potato head is complete, the class will receive a popsicle party.

HOME-SCHOOL CONNECTION
Each day, your child will bring home a blue folder. The right pocket will be labeled “Keep at Home” and the left pocket with be labeled “Return to School.” The left side of the folder is where the behavior log is kept. As explained above, your child’s color status for each day will be filled out on the behavior log. Please look over your child’s folder every day and discuss with him/her how the day went. Once you have reviewed the behavior log and your child’s paperwork, please sign the behavior log for that day.
