REPORT CARDS:
Report cards will be sent home on Friday, May 23rd. Please review your child's report card and work on any skill not mastered with an "S." Any skill marked as "I" or "N" (improving or needs improvement), needs to be mastered so your child is prepared for first grade.

Summer Worksheet Packet...
Please remember to work on the reading and math worksheet packets throughout the summer. Also, PLEASE read with your child and have him/her read with you. All of the kids have progressed very far in their reading fluency, and I would hate for them to lose any of this fluency due to lack of practice. You can find age-appropriate books at most book stores, on amazon.com, scholastic.com, and sometimes at Wal-Mart and the Dollar Store. The library is also a free resource where you can find leveled books for your child.

Did you know that most brain development happens within the first five years of life? One way to give your child a head start in life is participating in the Parents as Teachers program. The Parents as Teachers program, also known as PAT, is a free and voluntary program available to all families in the Bernie school district who are expecting or have a child up to the age of five, but have not yet entered kindergarten. Please call or email Mrs. McGarity or Mrs. Williams to set up your first appointment. Appointment times are limited, so please don’t delay! You can also find us on Facebook!

The Stoddard County Emergency Service will make a presentation to the kindergarten and first grade students regarding what to do if there is an emergency. If your child ever needed to call 911, more than likely, s/he would need to know his/her address. Please practice this information with your child until s/he has it memorized. It is also helpful if your child knows a phone number to call in case of an emergency.

I CAN DRAW...
If your child forgets to give a man his "body" when drawing pictures of people (often times kids this age draw a circle for the head, then stick arms and legs out of the head and forget the chest), use this simple visual to help them get accustomed to drawing all of the body parts in more detail.

MATH:
We have been working hard on addition these last few weeks. Now it is time to work on math fact fluency. Make some flashcards and practice with your child at home. Knowing math facts will be impressive to your child's first grade teacher next year. :)
Samples: 1+2= 2+3= 4+1= 5+0= 3+1= and 2-1= 4-3= 5-1= 3-0= 3-2=

Summer school will be offered again this year. This is an enrichment program and all students are welcome to attend. If your child is currently in school, please return the permission form as soon as possible. If you have a child eligible to attend kindergarten this upcoming fall, s/he may sign up for summer school too. If this is the case, please come up to the school and Mrs. Debbie in the office will provide you with the paperwork.
